Why are emailed attachments larger than the original file size?

I am using windows live hotmail on web based interface and also using my yahoo mail account on outlook email program. Packet Switching Is the technique at which transfer of data travel from one source node (computer or particular IP address) to the another deatination node. When we use packet switching technique to transfer data from one source to another destination then data of file devide into the shorter form of packet and for arranging those data at the destination node source node at the time of transfer put some headers into the packets of data which make the attached file more larger then the original size of the file.
Now a days packet switching techniques used on various transfer mode of data from source node to destination node.

It may not be possible to arrange those files as same as it has been arranged on the source end at the time of sending the attachments, If the particular destination node decrypt the attachments with another format like it has to decrypt with 32 bit format but because the destination operating system and the processor using 64 bit format to decrypt the data then file size will increase automatically than the original file size.
